The student tutors can be scheduled whenever, wherever it works for both students.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt;color: #ff0000\">\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;color: #800000\"><b>A FEW Study Tips<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\"><b>1. <\/b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><b>Get organized!<\/b><\/span> It\u2019s hard to study when you can\u2019t find your study guide. Put everything in your notebook in order and punch holes in handouts so you won\u2019t lose them.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\"> <b>2. <\/b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><b>Do your homework: <\/b><\/span> the only reason homework is assigned is to help you understand the material and prepare you for the test. Ignoring your homework or not doing it thoroughly will hurt you when the test comes.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\"> <b>3. <\/b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><b>Use your notes!<\/b><\/span> Your teachers give you notes for a reason. They often have answers to your study guides. Look at your notes and assignments FIRST, then turn to your book for answers.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\"> <b>4. <\/b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><b>Review every night: <\/b><\/span>Take 5-10 minutes to read over your notes EVERY NIGHT. Highlight anything you don\u2019t understand and ask about it in the morning. Write 1-2 sentences summarizing the main idea of the notes.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\"> <b>5. <\/b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><b>Ask for help: <\/b><\/span> ask Ms. Babineau questions during class, ask to come in before or after school, or ask about the AICE tutors: students who have already had this class and are happy to help you get through. Also &#8211; contact Ms. Bechtle (<a href=\"mailto:Dena.Bechtle@stjohns.k12.fl.us\">Dena.Bechtle@stjohns.k12.fl.us<\/a>) for a list of AICE student volunteer tutors in any subject!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\"> <b>6. <\/b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><b>Come to study sessions:<\/b><\/span> if Ms. B doesn\u2019t propose a study session then ask her if one can be organized. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\"> <b>7. <\/b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><b>Memorize it!<\/b><\/span> Studies show that you need to see something 6 times in order to remember it.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\"> <b>8. <\/b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><b>Reward yourself:<\/b><\/span> give yourself study breaks and treats to help you stay focused and unstressed. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\"> <b>9. <\/b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><b>Understand it:<\/b><\/span> THIS IS A BIGGIE!! Many students got As in middle school by simply memorizing. In high school we use more critical thinking; that means you need to make sure you actually understand the material as opposed to being able to just spit back the notes. Try the following to check your understanding of concepts, vocabulary, etc.:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\">a. Draw it.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\"> b. Come up with examples and non-examples (What is it like; what\u2019s the opposite of it?)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\"> c. What does it make you think of?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\"> d. What is it composed of (this could be root words that show the meaning or ideas that contributed to a theory, etc)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\"> e. Argue for or against it.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\"> f. When you fill out the demographic information, you will be asked for your &#8220;florida identifier&#8221;, which is your social security number with an &#8220;X&#8221; after it. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\">Once you&#8217;re in, you&#8217;ll be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><i><b>AMAZED<\/b><\/i><\/span><b> <\/b>at the information you have access to! You can view your grades for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">every<\/span> high school course you&#8217;ve ever taken, and even compare your transcript with the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><b>Bright Futures Scholarship Eligiblity.<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b>This will show you what requirements you&#8217;ve completed &amp; what ones are missing. <b> <\/b>You&#8217;ll also be able to view your<b> <\/b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><b>Bright Futures GPA<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b>(which is different from the GPA on your report card!) to see how close you are to qualifying for money for college! It could be very helpful if students take a look at the suggestions the research proves are the most effective.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt;color: #800000\"><strong>College Entrance Exams<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: georgia, palatino, serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">I encourage students in all grades &amp; parents to look at the information available via collegeboard.com. Have your student try the &#8220;question of the day&#8221;, search for the right major, etc. <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000dd\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><i><b>My standard advice is for students to study 15-20 minutes per night for 30 days prior to taking the SAT or ACT.<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: georgia, palatino, serif\"> <span style=\"color: #000000\">ACT has study help as well &#8211; at ACT.org, or ACTstudent.org&#8230; <\/span><span style=\"color: #dd0000\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><b>All juniors should have at least one score &#8211; but preferably one SAT and one ACT before the end of this year.<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"> There&#8217;s one more of each still available &#8211; so if your junior student hasn&#8217;t taken them yet &#8211; GO ONLINE AND REGISTER NOW!!! <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\"> In the fall, as a senior, test scores are required to be able to submit a complete college application package. Some deadlines are as early as Oct. 15th, so there is not enough time to wait &amp; take the SAT or ACT next fall, and have a score available by the deadline. And students should consider taking a subject area test if they are currently taking an AICE or AP course that corresponds to a subject area test.
