Intensive Reading Syllabus:

This class is to assist students who are fluent readers but did not pass the FCAT.  It focuses on reading comprehension and strategies using a variety of text including current high-interest novels.  Other focuses will be Vocabulary, Writing, Independent Reading.  We will also be practicing and using strategies with the goal of passing the FCAT.

We will also have weekly access to use of computerized reading programs that will expose the student to current events and other informational text.

The students will have a wide variety of reading materials to choose from for independent reading.  I have a nice class library as well as time built in to our class for SAHS check-out.  Students are required to be current on any media fines and have their student ID to check out from the library.

Students will need to be prepared for class by having 2 spiral notebooks, pens, pencils, highlighters and 1 two pocket folder with prongs.

Please support your student by encouraging your them to read at least 20 minutes per night (anything!).  Practice is key.....

The District Code of Conduct and Grading scale will be followed.

Our first novel will be "Copper Sun" by Sharon Draper.  It would be helpful for your student to have their own copy.

4/10/2012

Welcome Back!  The final 9 weeks of the 2011-2012 school year will be focused on working with FCAT and other test taking strategies.  We will also be completing our 4th and final novel "Hip-Hop High School" by Alan Lawrence Sitomer.  It would be helpful if your student had their own copy of the novel to make sure they are able to keep up with the class-especially in light of the fact that the schedule will be rather inconsistant during FCAT  and EOC testing.

As always, the students are expected to complete their portfolio (notebook) daily including bellwork, vocabulary and exit quick-writes.  The students are also required to complete a weekly reading log (due every Monday) that reflects 20 minutes of daily independent reading.  Reading is a process, not a product and daily practice is key to success!

It is my pleasure to assist your student in improving their reading skills. Together we can make a difference!

Ms. Rock
