Center for Student Opportunity's free Opportunity Scholars Program

We appreciated your letter of recommendation for our 2011 Opportunity Scholarship earlier this year and applaud your support of students striving to be first in their family to go to college. We hope that you have future students apply for the scholarship and, in the interim, encourage any high school or middle school students who are first-generation and/or low-income and/or from minority backgrounds to register for Center for Student Opportunity's free Opportunity Scholars program.

Your students can sign up at http://www.CSOcollegecenter.org/signup~to become Opportunity Scholars, if they have not already done so. This FREE program for first-generation and traditionally underserved students is open to students from grades 6-12 and the program enables them to:

~~~ Connect directly with colleges featured on CSO College Center (4-year residential institutions committed to access, opportunity, and success for your students)
~~~ Receive monthly newsletters (check out our recent Opportunity Knocks fly-in and fall visit edition) with tips and timelines

~~~ Apply for a $2,000/year scholarship~ (winners serve as bloggers on http://www.CSOcollegecenter.org/blog)
CSO is excited to support your students in their college-going efforts. Please contact me at cmartin@csopportunity.org~or by phone at (301)363-4220 so we can discuss further collaboration.
Best,
Quest Bridge College Prep
Please read below for an opportunity for scholarship money. ~Questbridge has never asked me to refer students to them before - but if anyone is interested and meets the qualifications, please feel free to either let me know or go on their website & get the details of using this scholarship service. ~In the past, students have initiated the service, and then let me know when they were using Questbridge and I submitted the counselor information after their applications were already started.
Anyway - please check out their website & let me know if anyone needs my input for their application, ok?
Thanks!!
I'm pleased to announce the launch of the 2012 QuestBridge College Prep Scholarship for high school juniors, which provides awards to help high-achieving, low-income students become successful applicants to the nation's best colleges. This year, more than 1,500 students will be selected nationally as College Prep Scholars.
REFER YOUR STUDENTS
We rely on educators like you to spread the word about our programs to the students you work with every day. Successful applicants are academically strong students from low-income families (typically earning less than $60,000 per year). You can learn more about our selection criteria here.
Please refer your qualified students to us by filling out this brief online form, and we'll be sure to contact them with more information. We also encourage you to distribute our outreach materials by handing them to students or posting them at your school, library, or community center.
COLLEGE PREP SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS
Through a single application, students can access multiple opportunities, including full scholarships to college summer programs at schools such as Harvard, Stanford, and Yale; invitations to our College Admissions Conferences at Northwestern, Princeton, and Stanford; individualized college admissions counseling, and more. View all of the awards here.
The online application is available on our website, www.questbridge.org, and is due on March 27, 2012. It is completely free to apply.
We thank you in advance for spreading the word about the College Prep Scholarship. For further information, please contact us at questions@questbridge.org.
Kind regards,
Q:  What is meant by disAdvantaged?
A:  We are looking for individuals with academic potential and who have a history of persevering through hardship.  There is no income range specified for qualifying applicants because other challenging factors may be considered besides a shortage of finances.
Q:  What is the amount of the average award?
A:  The average award is $500.
Q: How many awards are given?
A:  Usually there are 10 scholarships awarded each year.
Q:  Can scholarship recipients be eligible for subsequent awards?
A:  Yes, but they must reapply each year to be eligible.
Q:  What are my chances of getting an award?
A:  The FSCF program is competitive.  The number and quality of applications vary, but generally we receive between 500 and 800 applications each year.  Remember, you will only have a chance of receiving an award if you apply.
Q:  Why does FSCF provide the scholarship program?
A:  The check cashers that comprise FSCF are community-based businesses that are dedicated to giving resources back to the communities that support them.
Q:  Must I be a high school student to apply?
A:  College students may also apply.  Most applicants are high school students who are in the process of applying to colleges.  We do ask for proof of acceptance by a university or college prior to issuing any awards.
Q: Do I still qualify if I am accepted into a community college?
A:  Yes
